Best Crypto Exchanges in Italy 2026

Italy is an EU crypto market operating under MiCA, with CONSOB and Banca d'Italia sharing supervisory responsibilities. The old OAM registration system has moved into the MiCA authorisation framework. Italian residents compare Young Platform with Coinbase, Kraken, Crypto.com, Bitpanda and Bitstamp, while the 2026 tax changes make reporting and record-keeping especially important.

Quick answer: which exchange is best?

Young Platform is the most natural Italy-focused comparison for users who value Italian-language support and local market relevance. Coinbase is often simpler for beginners, Kraken suits active spot traders and Crypto.com offers a broader app ecosystem. Bitpanda and Bitstamp are useful European alternatives. Compare MiCA status, EUR funding, spread, custody, withdrawal fees and tax records.

Do not treat an old OAM registration as proof of current authorisation. Verify the provider's current legal entity, regulator and service permission before depositing.

TL;DR

  • Italy applies the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA.
  • CONSOB and Banca d'Italia share important Italian responsibilities under the MiCA framework.
  • The old OAM VASP registration system transitioned into the MiCA CASP framework. An OAM listing alone should not be treated as current authorisation.
  • Young Platform, Coinbase, Kraken, Crypto.com, Bitpanda and Bitstamp are relevant comparison points.
  • For many crypto gains realised from January 1, 2026, the Italian substitute-tax rate is 33%, up from 26%.
  • Quadro RW, Quadro RT, foreign-asset monitoring and DAC8 reporting may be relevant.

MiCA, CONSOB, Banca d'Italia and the OAM transition

Italy applies MiCA as the European framework for many crypto-asset services. These include custody, operating trading platforms, exchanging cryptoassets, executing orders, transferring assets, providing advice and managing portfolios.

CONSOB and Banca d'Italia share important responsibilities under Italy's MiCA implementation. CONSOB is relevant to market conduct, authorisation and investor-facing activities, while Banca d'Italia has responsibilities connected to prudential supervision, payments and certain token issuers.

Italy previously used the OAM register for virtual-asset service providers. That was part of the earlier national framework. Providers that wanted to continue offering regulated services had to move into the MiCA authorisation framework by the applicable June 30, 2026 deadline.

An exchange authorised in another EU country may be able to passport services into Italy. Users should still identify the legal entity, home regulator, custody arrangement and complaints process.

Italian crypto tax in 2026

Italy changed its crypto tax regime for transactions from January 1, 2026. The general substitute-tax rate for many crypto-asset capital gains increased from 26% to 33%.

The former €2,000 threshold for crypto capital gains was removed for the newer regime. Do not assume that small crypto gains automatically qualify for a general exemption.

A reported exception may apply to certain MiCA-compliant euro-denominated e-money tokens, which may retain a 26% rate. This is product-specific and should not be applied to every stablecoin or euro-linked token.

Sales for euros, spending crypto and other disposals require careful records. Staking, mining, airdrops, lending, DeFi and business activity may receive different tax treatment.

Because the rules are detailed and changed recently, users with substantial activity should obtain advice from an Italian commercialista familiar with digital assets.

Quadro RW, Quadro RT and DAC8

Italian residents may need to report foreign-held cryptoassets and digital-asset accounts through the applicable tax forms. Quadro RW may be relevant for fiscal monitoring, while Quadro RT may be relevant to report capital gains.

The correct form depends on the asset, account, transaction and taxpayer. A foreign exchange, self-custody wallet and Italian platform should not automatically be treated as identical.

Italy has also implemented DAC8-related crypto reporting. Covered providers must collect and transmit certain customer identification, balance and transaction information. The first reporting cycle concerns 2026 activity, with the first submissions expected in 2027 under the Italian timetable.

Keep exchange exports, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, euro values, acquisition costs, fees and year-end balances. Platform reports may not contain every detail required for an Italian return.

EUR deposits and Italian payment methods

Italian residents commonly fund exchanges through SEPA transfers, cards or payment methods offered by individual providers. Availability depends on the platform, bank, account profile and compliance checks.

Compare the full route: deposit fee, card charge, euro-to- crypto spread, trading commission, withdrawal fee and blockchain network cost.

Use payment accounts in your own name, keep confirmations and answer source-of-funds questions accurately. Banks and exchanges may delay unusual transactions for fraud and anti-money-laundering review.

Custody and consumer risk

MiCA creates standards for authorised providers, but it does not make crypto equivalent to a guaranteed bank deposit. Prices can fall, withdrawals can be interrupted and a provider can experience insolvency, hacking or operational failure.

Ask whether you own actual crypto, whether withdrawals are available, whether customer assets are segregated and whether the provider lends or rehypothecates assets.

Proof of Reserves is one transparency signal, not proof that all liabilities are covered or that customers have priority during insolvency.
