Bitcoin Classic was a proposal, not a magic “original chain.”
Bitcoin Classic was a software project that proposed increasing Bitcoin’s maximum block size to 2 MB. It emerged during the scaling debate, when participants disagreed about whether larger blocks, off-chain systems, or a combination of approaches best served the network.
The important distinction is between a code proposal, a node deployment, a miner signal, and a chain that actually continues with economic and technical support. These stages are often blurred in social posts, but they are not interchangeable.

The exact meaning of “fork” depends on whether you are discussing code, consensus rules, a chain split, or a market ticker. A careful article names the level it is describing.
Hard-fork checklist
Before you trust the announcement
1. Identify the block: is the fork tied to a precise height or a vague date?
2. Identify the rules: what exactly changes in validation, block size, difficulty, or replay behavior?
3. Identify the software: can you inspect the node implementation and release notes?
4. Identify custody: which wallet or exchange supports which network and under what policy?
5. Identify the trap: does anyone ask for a seed phrase, private key, or remote-control session?
What changes for users?
The ledger split is only the beginning.
If a fork preserves a shared history, an address may appear to hold value on more than one chain. That does not mean the assets are equally valuable, equally liquid, or equally safe to move. Wallet software may expose only one chain, exchanges may pause deposits and withdrawals, and a replay attack can cause a transaction broadcast on one network to be repeated on another if protection is absent.
The safest workflow is to wait for official custody guidance, verify the network name and address format, avoid rushing to claim unfamiliar assets, and keep the original signing credentials offline. “Free coins” language is a common social-engineering hook.
