What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin.org

Overview

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer monetary network whose native asset is secured by proof-of-work and a distributed set of nodes. Its design emphasizes scarce issuance, self-custody, and settlement without a central operator.

History

The network launched in 2009 after the publication of the Bitcoin whitepaper under the Satoshi Nakamoto name. It began with a 50 BTC block subsidy and has moved through successive subsidy reductions as the chain has matured.

What to check now

The live card tracks market data only. For meaningful Bitcoin updates, separate network activity, developer releases, mining economics, custody policy, and market price from one another rather than treating a single chart candle as a protocol update.

Context warning. Bitcoin’s market price can move sharply, and a price feed says nothing about custody quality or transaction finality for a specific payment.

Market cap and volume help describe the scale and recent activity represented in this snapshot. They do not tell you how easily a specific order will execute, how concentrated ownership is, or whether a contract is secure.

Research checklist

Before you trust a token

Confirm the identity. Match the project name, ticker, contract address, and chain. Similar symbols can represent unrelated assets.

Check the market. Look beyond a percentage move: liquidity, spread, volume quality, holder concentration, and venue differences matter.

Read the contract context. A market-data feed is not an audit and cannot rule out minting, freezing, blacklist, or honeypot behaviour.
